The Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, addressed the 9th Convocation of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Dharamshala on Friday, highlighting the role of education, innovation, and youth participation in nation-building.

In his address, the Vice President praised Himachal Pradesh as both “Dev Bhoomi” and “Veer Bhoomi,” acknowledging the state’s cultural heritage and its significant contribution to the armed forces.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta, state minister Chander Kumar, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, and Members of Parliament Anurag Singh Thakur and Rajeev Bhardwaj.


Emphasis on India’s Academic Legacy and Modern Education

Referring to India’s ancient centres of learning such as Nalanda University and Takshashila, the Vice President highlighted the importance of continuous intellectual development.

He noted that historical institutions thrived due to a culture of debate, research, and lifelong learning among teachers and scholars.

Drawing parallels with modern education, he stressed the need for universities to prioritise:

  • Faculty development
  • Interdisciplinary research
  • Innovation in teaching methods
  • Global academic collaboration

He said such measures are essential to build a competitive higher education ecosystem aligned with India’s development goals.


Implementation of National Education Policy

The Vice President appreciated the university’s implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, noting its inclusion of Indian Knowledge Traditions in the curriculum.

He also highlighted initiatives such as translating academic and literary works into regional languages, including Dogri and Punjabi, describing them as efforts to strengthen indigenous intellectual traditions.

According to him, such initiatives reflect a renewed confidence in India’s knowledge systems and promote inclusivity in education.


Call for Institutional Collaboration

The Vice President emphasised the importance of collaboration between central and state universities.

He said partnerships through joint research, shared faculty expertise, digital resources, and academic exchanges can strengthen the overall education ecosystem.

Such cooperation, he added, would contribute to building a globally competitive academic environment in line with the vision of a developed India.


Focus on Innovation and Community Engagement

Highlighting national initiatives such as Startup India and Make in India, the Vice President said these programmes have created new opportunities for young innovators.

He commended the university’s “Community Lab” initiative, which encourages students and faculty to engage with nearby communities.

According to him, such outreach programmes help students understand grassroots realities and contribute to social development.


Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision

Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the Vice President said achieving the goal of a developed India will require a balanced approach that includes:

  • Economic growth
  • Social inclusion
  • Technological advancement
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Ethical leadership

He emphasised that youth and students will play a central role in achieving this vision and called for inclusive development across all regions and communities.


Women’s Participation in Education

The Vice President expressed satisfaction over the increasing participation of women in higher education.

He noted that more than 700 students received degrees and medals at the convocation, with a majority being women.

Out of 32 gold medalists, 23 were women, which he described as a reflection of growing empowerment and contribution of women to national progress.


Call for Drug-Free Campuses

Addressing concerns related to substance abuse, the Vice President appreciated the university’s efforts to maintain a drug-free campus.

He warned that drug abuse has serious consequences for individuals, society, and the nation.

Urging youth to take a stand, he called upon students to commit to a drug-free lifestyle and contribute positively to society.

He also emphasised the importance of prioritising national interest, reiterating the message of “Rashtra Pratham.”
